The uabSOPH will extend its free and voluntary COVID-19 testing and prevention program for public and private K-12 schools through the 2022-2023 school year.

The program first began last school year in collaboration with the Alabama Department of Public Health and Alabama State Department of Education. A total of 223 schools participated and administered over 141,000 PCR tests and 300 rapid antigen tests across the state, according to UAB.

“There’s just not enough schools testing, and in the schools that have signed up, not enough parents have volunteered to really make it effective in slowing down the spread of the disease,” said State Superintendent Eric MackeyTo incentivize more districts to participate, this year the program will offer new services including HEPA air purifiers, rapid over-the-counter test kits, optional student rewards cards, funding to hire on-site testing liaisons, and supplemental funding for participating...

While case counts at the beginning of this school year are 67% lower than this time last year when the Delta variant was surging, 12,408 children under the age of 18 tested positive for COVID during the month of August, according to data from ADPH. Pediatric vaccination rates in the state are much lower, with only 1.3% of children under four, 14.6% of 5-11 year olds and 37% of 12-17 year olds receiving the vaccine.
