Uvalde High School head coach Wade Miller and senior football player Justyn Rendon speak to the media before an NFL football game against the Indianapolis Colts Sunday, Sept. 11, 2022, in Houston. The victims of the Uvalde mass shooting will be honored before the game.Like most of the state outside of the Houston area, the town of Uvalde — located about 280 miles west of Houston and 380 miles southwest of Dallas-Fort Worth — is Dallas Cowboys country.
Miller and his players made the four-hour drive to Houston and were put in a stadium suite as special guests of the Texans. Earlier this month, Texans linebackers Kamu Grugier-Hill and Christian Kirksey and coach Lovie Smith made the trip the other way and met with the team and. In June, Texans players started a pool and came up with $200,000 to donate to the Robb School Memorial Fund, which provides financial assistance to the community.
Rendon said Texans players, who are wearing"Uvalde Strong" stickers on their helmets, have talked to his teammates about going out every Friday night and being ready to compete, but Miller said they’ve delivered a much stronger message to his team. “They tell them how much they can uplift our community through their actions,” Miller said. “I’ve been preaching that to them, but I didn’t play in the NFL, so they’ll listen a lot more to those guys than they’ll listen to me.”
