She says the commute to Dublin can take between 90 minutes and two hours, depending on traffic, and then she has to get to UCD.
"I'm willing to join the other students who are currently looking to stay on campus in tents, I would be more than willing to do that, that's how bad it is". The 20-year-old has a budget of €750 a month and is looking for a place in the city centre or south Dublin. The English and sociology student did her Leaving Cert in 2020 and did remote learning for first year in college.
"First year of college was all online and the beginning of second year we had mask wearing and social distancing measures"."I'll miss out on a lot of society events, hanging out with my friends, the college stuff that I missed out in first year cause of Covid".Last year, Shauna lived in digs from Monday to Friday and had really hoped to find accommodation for the whole week this year.
shaunamaee I have offered this student a room, and I sent her a message on fb, commented on her tweet, sent her a DM on twitter, I haven’t heard anything from her. I live 5 minutes from the the 46A bus route, then it’s just a 15 minute ride to UCD. Also close by are 75, 7A and 45A
Shauna....
why didn't rté interview the lad in the back of a van commuting to dublin at 5 in the morning.,you wouldn't see that on rté. a student considering sleeping in a tent who cares. rté shite broadcasting again, no journalism done here just crap and getting well paided for it.
The poor little snowflake. Too much to expect that she'd do what generations of meath students attending UCD have done before her and get the bus. Her sense of entitlement is astounding.
Young people are being ripped off by unjust rental costs and greedy uni's that push useless degrees. She should cut her losses, drop her course, and study something (online) that will get her a good job. Don't become just another one of the many underemployed.
Ppl are forgetting that the public transport is scandalous. Most towns/villages don't have links and what 18 year can afford a car and insurance and be full licence. Fees are ridiculous for college This country is going downhill fast. I Feel for the youngins DOE DOT
Hi Shauna did you get sorted.
Sensational headline. She will not be allowed pitch a tent on Campus or on any University campus in Ireland. Outside of creating a pandemic of camping, what about the logistics involved, sanitation, rubbish collection, all night parties. Assaults, antisocial behavior, etc etc.
The Kells accent has changed a lot in the last few years
She’s probably a refugees welcome fan
Nothing about the protests against NATO warmongers happening accross Europe? RTE is bought and paid for
Hopefully a nice Ukrainian will put her up in dublin soon
I’m from Navan (1 stop before/after Kells) and we’ve always got the bus up to college, I’ve done it myself years ago.
Give this young man a flat ffs
The entitlement from this young generation! I mean what does she expect a reasonable commute or affordable housing? She should think herself lucky she can afford a tent
There's lots of people who commute by car from kells and surrounding areas to Dublin each day. Could she get a lift and contribute towards fuel instead of bus?
Shauna looks exactly like the type to have a Ukrainian flag in her profile so... 🤷🏻♂️
If only the government weren't importing millions to live where we should 🤔
Sadly the bare minimum single rooms for student go these days is around 1-1.2k. It's a disgrace.
Edmond Ryan is not fit for the job ElectionNOW
Lol Shauna 😆
Better let in lives in a warzone like Ukrainians
11 Years of this lad LeoVaradkar ...what do you expect...stop whinging...his party and its base are doing just fine
ah it's awful time for students, particularly the ones without wealthy parents :( everyone deserves the chance to get an education
In fairness kids from Drogheda & Dundalk make that commute daily and have been doing so for years. My friend's son bought a car and took four fellow students with him They got a door to door service for less than the bus And he got his car run for him There is solutions
Be interesting to know what distance she has limited her commute to be for the accomodation from UCD etc. Some students seem to expect/want to be able to roll in and out of college. Commuting is part and parcel of life, work, study, everything. You have to make sacrifices sadly
Coming to the point now where students should be looking to go to university in the UK. Ireland is just not equipped to accommodate students and it’s very embarrassing.
All these 'innovative' institutions, can't even use today's technology let alone think of the future. Work remotely or show that your a caveman.
Its difficult with accommodation, but the tent thing is a nonsense.
Garbage country
paddy sleeps on the streets while igor from kyiv is put up in a nice hotel
Bravo MichealMartinTD
250,000 Ukrainians though, yeh?
Ireland is now a third world country because of FineGael and fiannafailparty
She should stop her moaning and do it online or find a college closer to home.
