Was Biden wise to waive so much student debt or to do so now, amid inflationary pressures that threaten the economy as a whole? Our Editorial Board Roundtable offers its verdicts.

Fulfilling a campaign pledge, President Joe Biden on Aug. 24 announced sweeping targeted debt relief for student loans, forgiving up to $10,000 in student debt for those individuals making under $125,000 a year , and up to $20,000 for those who’d qualified for Pell Grants for lower-income students. Those still paying off their student loans would have monthly payments capped at 5% of their discretionary income, half what it is now., with 20 million having their debt cancelled in full.
