Volunteers at Parker Street Food and Furniture Bank in Halifax sort donations of school supplies. About 1,200 backpacks filled with supplies were put together for children this year. - Parker Street
On Thursday, a volunteer fills backpacks with school supplies for children who registered for pick up with the Salvation Army. A distribution event at the at the New Covenant Ministries Church in Dartmouth was held on Thursday. - Eric Wynne“If you look at groceries, some items have actually doubled and that’s no different with school supplies. Something that was 99 cents last year is over $1.50, $1.70,” said Gina Haggett, public relations director for the Salvation Army Maritime division.
The Salvation Army uses financial donations to purchase supplies based on classroom lists but they’re also collecting supplies at all their locations. Haggett said they’re “really short” on donations. It’s the same story at Parker Street, although their program runs a little differently. Applications for donations opened June 1 with a deadline of Aug. 12. Volunteers distributed backpacks last week, however there are still about 200 that need to be picked up or delivered.
