The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation Survivors’ Flag was designed in consultation with Inuit, Mi’kmaq, Atikamekw, Cree, Ojibway, Dakota, Mohawk, Dene, Nuu-chah-nulth, Secwepemc, and Métis Survivors

On August 29, the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation’s Survivors’ Flag was raised on Parliament Hill in memory of the 150,000 Indigenous children who were forcibly separated from their families and communities to attend residential schools.

The flag raising honoured the Indigenous children who were sent to residential schools, the survivors, their families, the communities whose lives were forever changed, and those who never came home. The Survivors’ Flag is a symbol of remembrance to honour residential school survivors and all the lives and communities impacted by the residential school system in Canada.

The flag was developed through consultation and collaboration with Inuit, Mi’kmaq, Atikamekw, Cree, Ojibway, Dakota, Mohawk, Dene, Nuu-chah-nulth, Secwepemc, and Métis Survivors. You can learn about the meaning behind the flag’s design here. Sudbury MP Viviane Lapointe was in attendance. Of the event, Lapointe said “today’s ceremony was an emotional honour to both survivors and those who never had the opportunity to come home. We will continue to support Indigenous communities with the resources they need to heal. Together, we will continue to advance reconciliation, honour survivors, and remember those who did not come home. It is our responsibility to continue to listen, and to learn.
