According to a report, Angola is only SADC country without laws to protect pregnant pupils' right to education.SA has the lowest rate of child marriages in the Southern African Development Community and the second lowest in Africa.A Human Rights Watch report shows that Angola is the only country in the Southern African Development Community bloc that doesn't have laws to protect the education rights of pupils who are pregnant or adolescent mothers.
This is even though Angola ratified the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa .
However, the rate of child marriages in SA is the second lowest in Africa at 4%, behind Algeria at 3%. In Mozambique, a national decree that required pregnant students to study at night schools was struck off in November 2018.According to HRW, Africa has the highest birth rate among adolescent women globally. This was further accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic that resulted in school closures and economic challenges, forcing girls into early marriages.
