BYU says a fan who was directing racial slurs at a Duke volleyball player during their match Friday, was not a student despite the fact they sat in the student section.

"First and foremost, our priority is the well-being of Duke student-athletes," Duke Vice President & Director of Athletics Nina King said in the statement. "They should always have the opportunity to compete in an inclusive, anti-racist environment which promotes equality and fair play.

BYU's athletic director Thomas Holmoe told USA TODAY Sports that he spoke with Richardson and Duke volleyball coach Jolene Nagel and the decision was made to move Saturday's match against Rider to an alternate site in Provo. Holmoe said the school is looking into the incident and says no further discipline is expected except for the fan that was banned and anyone else identified in making the slurs.
