As part of the Kumeyaay Community College curriculum, students and volunteers learned to weave boats Monday and Wednesday

Kumeyaay students, professors and community members will sail 50 traditional tule boats into the ocean Saturday as part of Kumeyaay Community College’s curriculum and efforts for cultural preservation.in Kumeyaay — will begin around 10:30 a.m., when about 50 boats are launched at Silver Strand State Beach in Coronado.

Volunteers use twine to begin the first lashing of the tule plant in constructing the bundles of reeds necessary to build a tule boat.Prior to colonization, the Kumeyaay traditionally built tule boats to travel from inland lakes like Kumeyaay Lake, Cuyamaca Lake and Lake Murray to the ocean, where they would be used to fish or hunt whale.California Catholic Mission system
