'Best Before' dates are common, but only a handful of foods — such as baby formula and liquid diet products — have actual expiry dates that determine whether they are safe to consume.

Some items it makes perfect sense to have a BB date. Others - like candy, pop, chips, canned goods etc should just have a manufactured on date. It’s a huge waste since stores cannot sell or donate items past the BB date.

I’m sure this study and article were bought and paid for by the big grocers- less wastage for them means more profit. I’m in UK. You see food unfit for sale passed off before the fresh appear on shelf. Canadians like to “stock up”. That will be gone.Follow the 💰

Keep best-before dates – a good guideline for canned/packaged goods. Consumers can then decide for themselves whether to eat it past that date or not. Ie., yogurt is usually good for a couple of weeks after the bbfd. Rarely buy canned goods, except tomatoes foodsafety

What this piece is really saying is “you will eat bugs”

It would just give the go ahead for grocers to sell questionable product for full price...

Fresh fruits, vegetables, meat & dairy expiry is self- evident. Canned goods can be edible (though not necessarily tasty & nutritional) for years after their expiry date & they too become self-evident when gone bad. Just note the date you purchased the items & use good judgement.

jennabenchetrit 'Several Euro grocers- have been experimenting with new anti-food-waste initiatives, foregoing 'best before' and 'sell by' labelling on some of their products.' You quoted only uk chains & the UK HAS HAD THIS as LEGISLATION for 20 years (The are not experimenting), get informed.

Trudeaus Canada... the population soon forced to eat expired food.

I not only look at the best before dates, I reach to the very back of the cold shelf where the fresher milk is stored and I take those ones.

CBC is outdated.

Does anyone actually look at things for the date? I think the only thing I check is maybe my cream

If it smells good, looks good I'm gonna eat it regardless

The local grocery store displays all of the milk containers backwards so nobody can see the “best before” dates. Now, every time I open the refrigerator door to grab one off the shelf I am reminded of how stupid they think I am.

Expired and best before are completely different things. Best before dates are arbitrary and can be exceeded. Expiry dates are more significant and should be followed.

Expiry dates on packaged foods is so important to allow buyers to actually see how fresh the food inside is.

Best Before dates probably produce a lot of waste.

'Would you toss a container of yogurt after its 'best before' date passes? Or are you the type to keep eating until the smell, texture and taste tell you to stop?' Yogurt isn't the best example as in some manner of speaking it's already gone bad, but I'm for dates and judgement!

Lol who are these canadians? Are they ready to eat expired food? Why not do away with health inspections at restaurants too?
