Social, emotional and self-management skills are more important to help smooth transition into primary school

Teachers express concerns and say social, emotional and self-management skills are more important at this stageTeachers are concerned that some children starting junior infants are “over-prepared” in academic skills such as numeracy and literacy, a major study has found.

The research, which focuses on the transition from preschool to primary, was carried out by UCD’s school of education on behalf of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment . “You have children now who are two years in a preschool setting, so they’re coming into junior infants and a lot of what’s been done in the current junior infant class has already been done in the preschool, so there’s complete overlap,” one school principal told the study.

In addition, it points to the need for play-based learning to be enhanced at primary schools, as well as emphasising the need for social and emotional learning to be a more important target. Dr Seaneen Sloan, a lead researcher on the study at UCD’s school of education. said the findings emphasise the importance of preschool experiences in supporting children’s early learning and development and providing a firm foundation for primary school.

Well, given the rate at which they're dropping standards at second- and third-level, it does make sense to nip this 'learning' nonsense in the bud as soon as possible. Ideally, they'd all be dropped on their heads coming out of the womb.

So they are complaint that the kids are smarter. Which makes their job easier. What’s going on

My son could read & write prior to school as well as put his coat on & socialise. He was rewarded by being put on the corridor at 4 years old. Needless to say I changed schools.

The comments here are ridiculous. Teachers would much prefer if parents taught their children how to put on and zip up their coats, how to open and close their lunch boxes, and how to put things into a bag rather than teaching them to read, write, add and subtract!

Parents are concerned that their “over-prepared” children aren’t being properly challenged

The problem isn't clear. Is it teachers finding it difficult to cope with inequality or children's lack of interpersonal or self-management skills?

Teachers whinging and moaning again .after 3 months break

I don’t understand what’s hard to comprehend from this study? Preschools are overcompensating with academic skills and not developing social and personal skills which are ridiculously important to have. Great, Ben can read but can’t zip his coat

Personally, I find it a great advantage to have an overly prepared junior infant because when a teacher is out and with subs so scarce they can tip away showing the class what they know.

Then maybe the teaching needs to step up.

It's much less work for a teacher if they have a class of children who are at about the same academic level. Differentiation - preparing activities appropriate for children at different levels - demands quite a lot of extra effort.

Now your a bad parent for trying to make sure your kid is smart 😂😂😂

So home schooling is doing more to educate them than schools?

So a major study was conducted and the conclusion is that parents shouldn’t be parents. That “feeling” are more important than literacy. God help the next generation if this poisonous woke ideology is allowed to take hold.

I think it is about a balance and finding out what you will be able to achieve in working with children through play as well as theoretical knowledge. I think it is important they should compliment one another, to try and achieve the best possible outcome on behalf of children.

How can a child be over prepared? Each child develops and progresses to their own pace with the added encouragement and resources of parents/caregivers and family. Sounds to me like a moan for the sake of it 😃

Probably concerned that these kids might be critical thinkers and ask questions!

So am I reading this correctly, teachers are worried that kids are too smart to start school? Does that mean that teachers like stupid children?

Teachers weren’t too concerned about emotional and social well-being when they were calling for shutting down schools and forcing kids to wear masks.

Absolute rubbish!! The first thing most pre schoolers learn in the early weeks are all based around independence & self care.
