With the rising cost of living making it more challenging for families, school nutrition programs are bracing for an increase in demand.

“At this point, it hasn’t impacted our ability to provide food. We haven’t been providing less food or limiting the number of lunches we’re able to provide but those costs are real,” she said. BB4CK is holding a back-to-school fundraiser as well, which launches on Sept. 1. Every dollar donated in the month will be matched by the organization’s matching donors.Article content

This school year, the board anticipates getting support for 150 schools from BB4CK, 25 schools from the Breakfast Club, 37 from the School Nutrition Program and 12 from Calgary Meals on Wheels. Schools also have emergency pantries with pre-packaged food in case of forgotten lunches. Seven schools also receive help from the provincial government’s School Nutrition Program and two schools get support from the Calgary Food Bank’s weekends program. The Integrated School Support Program and BB4CK also help out.
