Despite Columbus City Schools' public announced plans to distribute free lunch and next-day breakfast meals on Wednesday — the first day of school during the teachers union strike — some students still went hungry.
On the first day of scheduled classes for Columbus City Schools students who were working remotely because of the three-day-old strike by the Columbus Education Association, students at the rec center in Linden were able to grab a snack of Goldfish, a Nutri-Grain granola bar, an applesauce and either a Capri-Sun or Minute Maid apple juice box.
Families picking up their lunch will also receive a breakfast option for the next day. There are hot and cold meal options available in grab-and-go containers. School district safety and security personnel assist students and families in accessing the meal sites. But not all students were fed. Dominion Middle School ran out of meals Wednesday at noon, said Rynee Lantz, 47.
The pair waited in line for about five to 10 minutes before someone announced to the families in line that not everyone would be fed.
And republicans just cut free school lunch.
