Katy ISD School Board Member Dawn Champagne holds a form that lays out a proposed framework that could be used to evaluate library books in the district during a school board meeting Monday, Aug. 22, 2022, at Katy ISD Educational Support Complex in Katy.
“...I think that some of the books that are still in libraries go against this,” she said. “‘Looking for Alaska’ has alcohol, smoking and explicit sex and yet has remained in school libraries. I don’t get it. I don’t understand how that doesn’t go against the penal code. And ‘Flamer’…also has sexual …and they passed ”
At a Jan. 24 board meeting, however, he said, “This is about a war on children to sexualize our children at an early age and glamorize transgenderism.” , that school boards have discretion to remove works considered vulgar based on community values. The ruling did not clearly define what constitutes pervasive vulgarity.
To the far right extremists, freedom means doing what they tell you to do, including which books to read! So to them, the freedom is all belonging to them to tell everyone else what to do.
This is already happening in CyFair. My son started Kindergarten, and I received a notice asking if I wanted to opt out of having my child check out books from the library.
