Tens of thousands of education workers represented by CUPE Ontario could be in a strike position in October, the union says.

CUPE Ontario, which represents 55,000 education workers in public, Catholic, and French schools, will take a strike vote in late September. If the majority of workers vote in favour of a strike, the union could order job action in October.

Laura Walton, president of CUPE’s Ontario School Boards Council of Unions , said the union has refused a government offer that amounts to a pay cut after factoring in inflation. CUPE’s education workers, mostly women, earn an average of $39,000 a year, putting them on the brink of poverty, she said.tap here to see other videos from our teamThe government’s pay increase offer — 2% a year for those earning under $40,000 and 1.25% for those over that threshold — will not make up for wages that have been lagging for a decade, a situation that will worsen with the rapid rise of the cost of living, she said.

The government would be obliged to offer the same package to all education unions, including teachers, and estimates the financial impact at $21.8 billion over three years.

Do these people have no shame? Let’s demand that ALL their benefits, perks, pensions and salaries be made public and let the taxpayers decide if they’re being treated unfairly. Enough already.

Let them stay out without a paycheque until Christmas. It isn't like 4 months will hurt the kids. Everyone was more than happy to let kids off during the pandemic.

Blow the whole thing up ! The majority of teachers with the help in their union proved when the shit hits the fan they all run and hide in their garages

CUPE sets strike votes for end of September, says it doesn't guarantee walkoutOntario education workers including librarians, custodians and administrative staff could walk off the job as early as October, after their union set a strike vote. Using children as bargaining chips Education workers librarians etc don't really care about their jobs, they only care about how much more money they can get when every other person is suffering. 5 decades ago when I was in school teachers back then had a lot less 2 work with yet they did so much more than today If the vote is in favour of a strike, then strike! No more stupid 'work to rule' and 'rotating strikes.'
