School board trustees describe 'threats' and 'vitriol' during COVID-19 pandemic ottnews ottawa

CBC NewsKeith Penny, the OCDSB trustee for Zone 8 and Lyra Evans, currently the trustee for Zone 9, say they've both received angry emails through their roles. Penny isn't running again, but Evans is seeking re-election.But as his second term comes to a close, Penny isn't planning to run again, citing the threats he received during the COVID-19 pandemic as a big reason.

Penny said he's not surprised less than half of people who served in the role last term wanted to come back for more, noting people have become "a bit squirrely" and more demanding in the past two years. Evans said she still wants to make a difference on issues that first drew her to the board, including seeking better outcomes for marginalized and low-income students and providing a stronger environmental lens for the OCDSB's decisions."The visibility of trustees increased a great deal as we started to make decisions …related to issues that there was no middle ground, that were particularly divisive," Evans explained.

It seems some people may be running for political reasons and not because of an interest in education. I am very worried how this will affect students after 3 years of disrupted school. onted

Alternative take - The last 2 years has shown the power & important role that school board trustees have & why we need to actually care about who gets elected.

Poor Lyra Evans. I can’t imagine why people would be angry at a trustee that played no small part in making kindergarteners wear masks all day.

LGBTQ2S+ advocates raise concerns about Ottawa school trustee candidatesTwo candidates for Ottawa Carleton District School Board trustee in this fall's municipal election are being criticized by LGBTQ2S+ advocates for alleged transphobic remarks on social media. Good, I will definitely vote for one of them. I have zero problem with what was said it’s factual. They want to be included, yet they demand a parade, and forcing inclusion, you know, because they want to be justlike everybody else. Really? If you want to be included, just live your life. There is now 100+ way to identify yourself. I identify as a dandelion now.
