The federal government has warned of an unprecedented shortage of teachers across the country, but many already in the profession say they’re desperate for secure and ongoing employment. So, what’s going on in Australia’s education system?

"It makes your year of teaching, your contract year, very performative — you are just jumping through hoops trying to prove yourself in order to win the position again next year," Stroud says.into the rise of temporary teaching contracts in NSW schools found teachers on temporary contracts work similar hours to their permanent peers, but feel like they're working harder — possibly due to the precarious nature of their roles.

Then there's the time it takes to keep up with applications, which Kate says can take up to three hours each. While Kate is approaching the end of her working life, the vast majority of teachers on temporary contracts are younger. says around 72 per cent of teachers are starting their career in casual or contract work and this combination of insecure employment and increasing workloads is contributing to the current workforce shortages.

Rachel Wilson says insecure employment can be "a career-stopping issue", especially when it comes to younger teachers who are most likely to be affected. This is because it's often when people might be looking to take out a bank loan or buy their first home, which is much harder to do on a short-term or casual contract.

No problem. i heard that ADFA had a big open day in Canberra, it is recruiting our future agecare workers, teachers... Govt will just need to send army to help with shortages

The seven year “veteran” Part time Primary School teacher is “burnt out”? Does she need more holidays? 🤡🌍

JasonClareMP There’s no doubt ‘casualisation’ of teaching is a HUGE reason education in Aust, especially NSW, has gone downhill since 2000 when OECD’s PISA started. Luckily my kid had a great public high school but even there, it was an issue. Fix it JasonClare Sharp suit BTW.

No wonder there's a teacher shortage? Contract to contract = zero job security. This 'casual employment' trend has to stop - not only in the teaching industry but everywhere. Acquiring employment 'burnout' is a real experience, once you have it it's extremely hard to shake off

Universities are casualised too. Oh and I've heard contracts are also useful because the school can end it at the start of the summer holidays leaving teachers with no income over Christmas
