The Duval County School Board voted yes to spend almost $9 million on metal detectors for all high schools.

Action News Jax’s Princess Jhané Stepherson was in the meeting and it was a quick yes vote.

Duval County Public Schools said the move was necessary because it adds an extra layer of security to your child’s classroom.Duval County School Police Chief Greg Burton said during the meeting these detectors will help save time, especially when some schools have up to seven entrances. “The detectors don’t require students to empty their pockets or bags while being screened,” Burton said.Burton said the time it takes to check makes students late to class, adding that the county’s current security checks are labor intensive.

The metal detectors will be in all 19 DCPS high schools. Coming up on CBS47 and FOX30 Action News Jax at 5, we’ll show you why that is and what security measures will look like if you have a child in elementary or middle school.
