Elizabeth Vela’s law journey was sparked when she did a project on her abuelita, who faced obstacles coming to the states.

She’s attending St. Mary’s University School of Law in San Antonio, and she’s known for quite a while that there are not that many women in her field that look like her. She attended the first Lawtina Network Summit at St. Mary’s. It’s essentially a relationship building and networking opportunity for Latinas in all stages of their career —whether they are 1L students or practicing lawyers. “And so as I went out my first year in COVID, there was a lot of tension.

Dr. Jill Lynch Cruz is a career development consultant who works with Latina attorneys and has worked alongside the Hispanic National Bar Association Latina Commission. Lynch Cruz’ research showed that a Latina's law journey has a lot of obstacles. It’s very nuanced, but she believes summits like this can help turn the tide.
