A new course at St. Thomas University, called 'Defunding the Police: Rhetoric vs. Reality,' will be taught to criminology students.

Prof. Sulaimon Giwa is the visiting Endowed Chair in Criminology and Criminal Justice at St. Thomas University this fall.

"Defunding the Police: Rhetoric vs. Reality" is a fourth-year criminology class that will examine what defunding looks like at police and community levels, and what implications this call to action has for racialized and Indigenous communities. Regardless of the terminology used to describe the phenomenon, Giwa said it's long been a topic of discussion and debate. The conversation became louder, however, after the police killing of George Floyd in 2020.

Giwa's life and academic experience have formed his opinions on policing, but he will not be imposing a particular perspective on students, he said. Rather, he'll be facilitating critical conversations."It's really difficult to come into this space in a neutral sense, because I visualize as a Black, gay man, and these are realities for me as well as you on a day-to-day basis," he said.

Black Lives Matter New Brunswick would like to see that change. The group's executive director, Matthew Martin, is in full support of the STU course, and said it has a place in all post-secondary institutions. Martin said the group has reached out to various police organizations in the province about the defunding movement. He said most police chiefs are open to having the discussion but fail to act on it.

Turning public policing over to multiple social babysitting agencies demeaning law abiding citizens (victims) paying the bills.

I wonder who the defund police crowd will call when people with guns are kicking their door in at 2:30 a.m.

Defund the CBC and give the 1.4 billion to whomever needs it. Fixed!

Give all the police a month off and see what happens. Fixed!

Is this a whole semester to explain this

Final exam... it's rhetoric. There you're done. Now go work at Starbucks.

Looking forward to the course teaching us about the fear, division, and propaganda machine that feeds the public, called “Defunding the CBC”. DefundTheCBC

Sounds like left wing lunacy

In a Nut Shell, it means 👇👇👇

Call a social worker!!!!!!!

Allow open carry and we can move right to abolish

It means more criminals getting away with shiz

Language used by society and politicians have often been bandaids in hopes issues will go away but never do. Instead they do create barriers to talking and resolving underlying issues.

You mean defund the university

You can already see the futures of these students slipping away. Sad.

If police weren't used as a fix all they could absolutely be defunded. The issue is they are frequently dispatched calls that they aren't meant to deal with.

What a stupid course

I would rather see Reform than Defund ,

Sooo edgy 🙄

Look no further than San Francisco for real world meaning. But hey universities live in la la land.

This is why we need guns.

If you need some ideas of what may be of more interest to working taxpayers.....

Stop blowing tens of thousands of dollars sending your kids to these commie shitholes.

This course is literally named 'Rhetoric vs. Reality' but you wouldn't know it from the early replies here. There are many who do not want to have these conversations or a more educated population.

I heard the portion of the class where they go out to a local statue or Federal Building and vandalize it is very Progressive,

Do not defend the police

Cbc State Run Media keeping Slavery alive When will you STOP exploiting minorities?

As long as Defund the CBC is next on the list, I am OK with it.

For me it's always meant redistribution of funding and resources to take the weight off the cops having to handle every type of situation that needs outside intervention. Cops are a hammer and you can't fix everything with one tool.

maybe it will end up like Seattle with the Mayor, in the end, begging the police for help.

I can only imagine the zealots signing up for this course…
