Experts will gather in Canberra tomorrow to address the teacher shortage crisis. Getting more student teachers to graduation would be a start.

A chronic national shortage of school teachers could be solved almost immediately if sky-high attrition rates from teacher education university courses of one in every two students were curtailed, says a leading education expert.

“The average completion rate for students in a teaching degree at university is 50 per cent,” Ms Paul said, noting that the average attrition rate across all courses was 17 per cent. Significantly, the survey found that large numbers both underestimated the starting level of pay for new teachers and over-estimated remuneration a few years in.. They are ranked fifth for highest paid in the OECD after Luxembourg, Germany, Canada and the Netherlands.
