White House officials plan to meet with student debt activists this week ahead of Biden’s self-imposed Aug. 31 deadline for deciding whether to approve broad-based debt relief for millions of Americans.

President Joe Biden's advisers are set to huddle with student debt activists and advocacy groups this week as the White House weighs a final decision on forgiving large amounts of student loans. | Scott Eisen/Getty ImagesWhite House officials plan to meet this week with student debt activists and advocacy groups ahead of President Joe Biden’s self-imposed deadline of Aug. 31 for deciding whether to approve broad-based debt relief for millions of Americans.

Officials from the White House Domestic Policy Council, National Economic Council, Office of Public Engagement and Office of Political Strategy and Outreach are scheduled to attend the meeting. “The Department of Education will communicate directly with borrowers about the end of the payment pause when a decision is made,” Jean-Pierre said. On the issue of broad-based debt cancellation, she added, the White House was continuing to “assess our options.”

But the broader question of a mass loan cancellation program is more complicated. White House advisers have long been divided over the policy wisdom and political ramifications of forgiving large amounts of student debt. The internal decision-making process has dragged on for months without resolution.

A good start, but also increase Pell grants too, thanks. Debt relief isn't enough, education needs to be funded better across the board.

thankfully joe famously loves activists and hates it when people have debt and younger people asking him to do things that help them has never pissed him off. feeling good about this

let me guess, it’s going to be one of those “lol did you actually thought I was going to do this?!” conversations like Obama and immigration activists

If he wants them to show up and vote in November, we know the answer. Less drama would be better.

WhiteHouse POTUS Have the USDOE 1) assume student loans, for American citizens. 2) cancel interest, 3) apply interest that has already been paid to loan principal, 4) apply all future payments to principal. 5) future student loans for citizens will carry 0% interest.

Weird that some of y’all hand clutch about personal choices and responsibility and claim Biden is buying votes over this but never say a peep when we throw bail out money at Wall Street and Fortune 500 companies. It isn’t like you audit those CEOs choices.

Debt activists 🤦‍♂️ Confirming they’ll B taxed unearned income for assisting/cancelling their debt 🤷‍♂️ Hmm, if they want 2 continue buying votes & saying ok 2 increasing our national debt where do I apply for a refund on my college debt that I worked hard to repay and did so

What do we want? Free Everything! When do we want it? Now and forever! Bidenflation BidenBoom

I want all my loans and debts paid by other taxpayers, too.

Get a job! If we can't pay our mortgages are those forgiven too?

Tell congress to stop giving out $200k for English majors. That would be a good place to start.

👎

Worst approval rating in history, try to buy votes nothanks

“Relief” for a consensual, voluntary debt assumed for a product/servicethey received.

No free lunch. Any debt relief better include some form of public/community service in exchange for loan forgiveness.

This should help inflation 🖨

Oh good grief, the clown is looking at polls and trying to buy votes.

What kind of education doesn't allow you to get a job and pay your own bills?

Those of us that worked our way through school are going to have to pay for their school too?

How do you spell 'buying votes'?

Pay your own debt, losers
