After anger-filled public meeting, Uvalde school superintendent acknowledges, ‘Trust has been crippled’

several days later. On Friday, he announced Gutierrez will now be the district’s assistant director of special education.

An attendee at the Uvalde school board meeting on Monday, Aug. 8, 2022, calls for accountability for law officers and others who were at Robb Elementary School on May 24 when a gunman killed 19 students and two teachers.Gutierrez’s move to a new job renewed the debate over her level of responsibility for security failures that may have made it easier for the shooter — Salvador Ramos, 18, of Uvalde — to gain access to the Robb campus.

“We still need answers, as some of the speakers have said, regarding May 24 when Uvalde lost 19 children, two teachers tragically, horribly because of the inaction of the law enforcement community of Uvalde,” Diana Olvedo-Karau, 63, of Uvalde said.
