The shortsightedness & general nincompoopery of the UCP government never ceases to astound me.

TO WHAT HOUSES? Hate to tell you how to do investigative reporting, but seriously… Take a look at the number houses available for sale in the area. Are there enough doctors for the influx of people? Spaces in schools? Jobs for their spouses?

This is ridiculous and reeks of corruption

“Alberta advantage” 🙄

When the actual fk Will Albertans learn conservatives do nothing but hurt them?!?!

Not enough tax dollars being laundered through the WarRoom so now you have to launder professionals?

Let’s help oilsand workers relocate to YMM where there are actually infrastructures to support and in need of population growth to revive

It is designed to fail. The housing question is moot. Nobody is moving there and the school will lose funding.

Just merge it with U of A and call it U of A - Athabasca Virtual Campus. No point in this school being standalone. This should have been campus only in the first place. demetriosnAB ableg

How is this a good use of taxpayer money? Where will they live? How does this make AU competitive in recruiting talent? How many votes will this buy? I have many questions.

🤣🤣🤣 This is as funny as the war room. Too much spending on the things that don't make a difference.

Did anyone ask WHY

Can we assume that the Calgary Lawyer and new board chair will more there as well or was this possibly all for show, or to help out a fellow Con(artist) NeverVoteConservative

The whole smart freaking idea of building a university in the middle of nowhere is .... remote learning; and the fact it diversifies the economy in AB is awesome. Until a dense dude from UCP come along to completely ruin, having no understanding of pretty much anything about it.

It sounds like another wackadoodle UCP plan to destroy another postsecondary education institution.

Where are they going to live?

Yet another moronic decision by the UCP…our taxpayers money is going to be spent on this as our healthcare system is in a shambles because Kenney refuses to spend money on it.

This is simply a defunding scheme in disguise. 1) make ridiculous unreasonable demands 2) cut funding when demands not met “Failure to do so, said Nicolaides, means the school risks losing its $3.4-million monthly provincial grant.“

Time to change the name of Athabasca University to Canmore U.

The irony of requiring onsite staff for a virtual school is overwhelming.

The recovery of our post-secondary institutions from the UCP mismanagement of the PSI file and the incompetence of this minister will take many years. The lack of vision and strategy is something to behold. ableg

A waste of money and effort to uproot people from permanent homes elsewhere. For what? Just a measly few votes?

I for one would be thrilled to move to Athabasca, it's a beautiful town surrounded by beautiful lakes and rivers. Nice vacinity to Edmonton and a thriving economy, reasonable housing coats. However this feels more like something a communist government would do.

My goodness! When you think the UCP Government couldn't be more asinine than they've already proved themselves to be they again prove you wrong!

500 staff = 500 households so around 1500 people into a town of 2800…

The whole point of AthU is to be a distance learning center. If the students can learn from home, teachers can teach from home. This was their MO long before the pandemic. This is just UCP trying to get fake gold stars from COVID conspiracy theorists.

Why would distance-learning employees need to live in a specific location. It doesn’t make any sense. Whose idea is this? Oh, wait…

Another fiscal waste serving NO PURPOSE.

Some screwed up pro-development plan steal 500 residents from other communities to build up another,

Even if 500 agree to the relocation, where will they be housed? Acto trailers? What about the other infrastructure and services required? UCP continue to live in a land of fiction and fantasy. abpoli ableg

So friggin' ridiculous. Athabasca & U of A being brought out into the street and tortured in full sight of all the other educational institutions. Remember how Red Deer College, with aspirations to be a Uni, was unilaterally railroaded by UCP into being a 'polytechnic'

This scheme will come to a screeching halt when the rest of us rename the town to Wokeabasca. FireTheUCP

Advanced Education Minister announces tender for 500 tents for immediate delivery.

sorry for the staff but basically someone lied like an entitled politician kept taking taxpayers money and decided on his own what to do if the building isnt being used ,where is the money going monthly someone is doing well with this deal. they have to be

after the Hinshaw bonus !!!!!

It’s almost as if demetriosnAB doesn’t think before spouting out these ridiculous ideas. He just sits back and fucks up education across the province and pipes in to feel like he’s doing something good. He isn’t.

Will they also bring in more docs, teachers, dentists etc as well? They're going to need them. How about housing?

With a student enrollment of 38,464, which includes internationals from over 87 countries, Athabaska U is an incredible online learning site. It speaks to 🇨🇦 diversity and inclusion. Only leaderless education-hating UCP would have the brass balls to remove support. LukaszukAB

Have you been to Athabasca? Are you sure you want to move people there?

OR they could focus their attention on policy that actually matters.

I don't understand moving an entire online/distance education program staff to any specific location.

What if they don't want to go?

The left is trying to build animosity against the Conservative party from the education system! Their drama never ends!

What an absolute clown show.

So they're going to build 500 houses? Increase the town's population by 50% If they can do that, why were they blaming Trudeau for the price of housing when they were blustering about supply and demand?

🤦🏽‍♂️ What's wrong with these people

Once again the UCP wants to waste taxpayer dollars. This is an online university. Staff and students do not need to be onsite.

Small government?

The UCP certainly are awful with money

Nothing says we make education a priority and believe in freedom like telling a university where their staff must live and how the university should spend its money.

WTF The ucp moto if it ain’t broke, let us have a shot at it.

This is literally nonsensical

So we are paying for University staff for a profitable post-secondary but we still haven’t given our school teachers a raise in nearly 10 years? Got it.

Something off about this.

Peak UCP - something is working well, they interfere unnecessarily, then pay tax dollars to fix what the broke. How do people keep voting for these fools?

This sounds weird.

DrJayDrNo No we will not. It is a stupid idea.

Ridiculous. Yet another ill-thought out plan by the UCP. Who is deep in the pockets of the UCP in Athabasca that stands to benefit from this reckless decision?

What about jobs in Athabasca for their partners and children? The UCP is making this an impossible choice for Albertans who have made AthabascaU the success it is. Instead of supporting them the UCP is blowing it all up for rural votes. Disgusting.

It's funny how cbc is the first to pick up this story!

Or, hear us out, don't. Let them be wherever they are. Backwards UCP is backwards.

Would’ve made more sense to provide some incentives to help oilsand workers to relocate to fort McMurray

Isn't this something the CRA compensates? Talk about replication!

Once again, the UCP and demetriosnAB create a problem where there wasn’t one, then try to buy their way out of the problem they’ve created with taxpayer dollars. It would be easier if he just said oops and fâcked right off.

Let Dimmi know what you think of this shitty idea. 780-422-5400

I suggest the Minister apply and compete for a job there. He's soon going to need a job, he's keen about living in Athabasca and he claims to have a PhD.. Perfect match.

Really? “ will help pay” meaning 100% or how much? What if families don’t want to move to Athabasca? Is there a Plan B ?Anyone checked out amenities and space for these families; e.g. in schools, medical services etc? What about spouses employment has that been considered?

I seriously don’t get this. They want 500 staff to move to a town of 2,800 over 3 years? Housing, infrastructure, schools, hospitals, seriously? How will local feel about housing prices going through the roof?

ableg abpoli

Isn’t the Athabasca University a remote, independent learning institution?

No one wants this.

Considering the UCP small govt, red tape reduction, let the market decide mentality, it is a really weird flex for them to dictate that any entity be forced to bend to the will of govt.

DrJayDrNo Albertans: this is YOUR money! Do you really think this is a wise use of YOUR money?

Pork. Barrel.

That’s some pretty sweet fiscal conservatism by the UCP right here.

Why? This is absurd and pointless. Complete waste of tax dollars.

But that’s sOciALiSm

JFC they cut university funding and axed hundred of jobs but will do this? Time for a new government that has a sliver of a clue!

“UCP donors need to build and sell overpriced homes to people with steady employment in Athabasca.”

What an enormous waste of tax dollars.

Will they also build houses for them?

The UCP moving intellectuals to work camps is pretty on-brand really. Disgusting.

Why not spend that money on hiring up new faculty/expanding existing programs rather than one time payments to move people to a specific small town? The former would have broad economic benefits. The latter…just helps some people in Athabasca sell their houses to newcomers.

Why?

Um no. No thanks, this Albertan says spend my tax money elsewhere. What do UCP own property there? This is bonkers
