A Sydney high school banned mobile phones. It had dramatic results | smh_andrew

A Sydney high school has seen a dramatic decrease in behavioural issues and a boost in physical activity and students talking to each other just two months after it tightened restrictions on mobile phone usage.

that students can bring phones to and from school for safety and communication “but simply would not be able to use them during their school day”. A NSW Education Department spokesman said high school principals have the discretion to manage “the use of digital devices to best meet the needs of their school communities”.SCEGGS Darlinghurst joined the list of private schools that ban students from using mobile phones this year.teachers were concerned about greater use of phones, “a seeming increase in students’ dependency on them, and just the plain distractibility of students, too.

Teachers also supported the restrictions, provided they were given a device to unlock the phone pouches if required for a lesson. Rule said not all students were as enthusiastic about the new phone restrictions as their parents and teachers.“Like any teenagers in the 21st century, I wouldn’t say students were jumping up and down in delight with the new policy and use of pouches,” he said.

_andrew They were banned when I was in high school.

_andrew Seems obvious but would never fly in the United States. Unlike Australia, parents and school age children in the U.S. live in constant fear.

_andrew Crazy idea: random drug testing and blood alcohol tests at universities and high schools, some work places. Not to say it's an issue for sure just curious of the results.

_andrew There should be a consistent department policy for all schools. Here's the petition

_andrew There's also a child safety aspect in that some kids may have less restrictions on their phones and share inappropriate content with their friends whilst at school

_andrew Exactly right. If we can now stop all PA messages and other interruptions students may actually be able to learn!

_andrew What does this even prove? Were there improvements in other areas such as learning outcomes? Having a reduction in 'behavioural issues related to phones' is hardly surprising or some kind of slam dunk.

_andrew Thank you so much for getting on this. If you read my tweets, real examples of what teens are getting access to in school hours - it is appalling. Met with smitchellmlc 's team - waste of time, heads in the sand around 'self regulation' - just like let babies cry 1950s policies

_andrew Der. We old people said years ago it is wrong. Now you finally waking up. Governments need to wake next.

_andrew Don't ban them, install jammers to cover the campus.

_andrew Average person 10+ years ago: 'Mobile phones are a distraction (at best) and shouldn't be allowed in schools.' Average person reading this today: 😒

_andrew Good effort

_andrew Mobile phone usage has been banned in Victorian schools since early 2020. Nothing innovative in this approach as it has already been proven effective south of the Murray

_andrew Common sense in the Australian education system for a change.
