With the peak of the latest Omicron wave expected to hit Tasmania, some parents and teachers are nervous about today's start to Term 3 and want masks mandated in schools, not just recommended.

Hobart single mother of three Mel Jewell is worried about having her children returning to the classroom as Term 3 gets underway in Tasmania.

The state is bracing for a predicted peak of coronavirus infections this month, with Tasmania consistently recording more than 1,000 new cases a day in recent weeks. "It's really hard, I just think bringing the mask mandate back in would help, for drop off and pick up especially, but in saying that even when there was a mandate, some parents didn't wear them, so it's hard when not everyone follows the rules," Ms Jewell said.

"It's very hard, [my kids] are not old enough to really understand the risk or understand why they should be wearing one.Students are being asked to wear masks but the measure has not been mandated."They both have a mask packed in their bags so it's there if they want to wear it, but yeah I don't think they will wear them to be honest," she said.

"They've both had COVID twice before and I feel completely at ease with how their school has managed it all so far."

After flying their little disease vectors around the country for school holidays - now they worry about school?

My nephews spent much of Term 2 being in the school hall with other year groups or watching movies because there weren't enough teachers to teach. Consistently teachers were sick with Covid. The media said zoom classes etc detrimental. How is this better? nswpol

Go figure..adults told ...work from home so if its good enough for a adult is sure as hell good enough for a child and no dr can assume with reinfection in a child they wont die .The government are in denial and we are in a wave . ,hello ... ! 🤦🏼‍♀️

More unethical fear spruiking by . You are responsible for the degradation of parents and children’s mental health from your constant pushing of irrational fears. When will you stop.

Kids should stay at home . All evidence is there on how the virus is not mild . What more do you need as a parent.. ? ... no job is worth the risk on your own flesh and blood . And the government truly dont give a crap on you and your family.

Alternate story: Early Years Educators and OSHC Educators burn out, having supported children & families without pause or protection, and without any form of media recognition since the first cases of COVID19 started to spread through Australian communities. UnitedWorkersOz

Are we STILL doing the mandating masks thing ? Can covid bedwetters get it through their thick skulls , mask mandates DONT WORK .

Just pull your child. Find a way to teach them at home.. real education while protecting your children from these people. Talk with friends, pull resources. Find a way.. the answer is US. ONEPARTYONEAMERICA

Children are safe from Covid. Unless your over 70 and/or a very sick person. There is nothing to worry about.
