The government this week set out ambitious plans to deliver net zero air travel by 2050. Analysis by a Cambridge University-based research group shows that reducing emissions has other costs that will require ambitious plans of their own.

"The Jet Zero Strategy is designed to future-proof aviation so passengers can look forward to guilt-free travel."

There are six key objectives that are meant to ensure that the government's ambitious 2050 goal is met. There are two that we're going to look at in more detail, but click on the others for a brief overview of what they entail.Capturing and offsetting carbon-dioxide emissionsZero emission flight The tool is backed by technical data from a wide range of industries and has been built by a team of over 60 experts from around the world, led by the University of Cambridge. It's not been launched yet but they shared some results with us, looking at a flight from London Heathrow to JFK in New York in 2035.

The climate impact that remains is mainly caused by non-CO2 effects like contrails. The only net CO2 emissions from the new fuels are from the construction of the equipment needed to produce the fuel - wind turbines, nuclear power stations, electrolysers and aircraft.Producing enough synthetic fuel for a flight from London to New York would use 40% more energy than a UK household consumes in a year. And that's for each passenger.

The price could fall due to improvements in efficiency and falling renewable energy prices, but even in the AIA's absolute best-case scenario they predict that using synthetic jet fuel will result in a 50% increase in the price of a ticket. Research by Possible shows that under successive governments the aviation industry has only met one of its targets set since 2000.

The dream of flying around in a climate-friendly way using synthetically produced kerosene (e-fuel) turns out to be a mirage when viewed soberly. The SAF admixture quotas are reminiscent of homeopathy. Currently, their share is a ridiculous 0.05%. 🛬

Just carry on we're doing no harm 🤔

Don’t believe their phantasy and propaganda.Aviation industry is a major contributor to global warming and climate change, hundreds of petroleum guzzling planes crisscrossing the planet 24/7.🤑🤧.

Liquid hydrogen is not science fiction and it can now be produced via renewables (power sources) All electric planes are, like cars, limited by the amount of lithium we can mine and the distance on one charge. My money is on hydrogen power.

I'm ready to bet that in a hundred years all airplanes will be electric. I'm optimistic that way.

We could probably figure all this out if we stopped wasting money on wars.

If they use ethanol
