Oakland A’s, with three picks on the first day of the MLB Draft, select catcher Daniel Susac from the University of Arizona with the 19th overall selection

The Oakland A’s selected catcher Daniel Susac from the University of Arizona with the 19th overall selection Sunday in the MLB first-year player draft.

This is the second time in three years the A’s have drafted a catcher — and a Northern California native — in the first round, as they took Turlock’s Tyler Soderstrom 26th overall in 2020. Some early-round selections like Matt Olson and Matt Chapman were home runs, but others like Addison Russell , Daniel Robertson , Billy McKinney and Kevin Merrell were traded in years when the A’s were in a win-now mode.

Along with their selection at No. 19, the A’s have two other picks Sunday, a second-rounder at No. 56 overall, and a Competitive Balance Round B pick at 69th overall.
