Meet a first-generation attorney with $347,000 in student debt who can't land a job and says 'there are a substantial number of people like me that are being forgotten'

After graduating from college and working as a social worker, Pederzani, now 37, wanted to continue helping people and saw a law degree as the next big step in doing so. As a first-generation student, he said he was frequently advised by attorneys and those around him that pursuing a law degree would leave him well off — and keep a roof over his head, even while in school — so he thought taking out student loans would be worth it.

But after graduating from law school in 2017, Pederzani today has $347,000 in student debt that keeps growing. He took out graduate PLUS loans to attend Seattle University School of Law, which allowed him to cover the full cost of tuition, but medical complications with his fiancée delayed him from taking the bar exam, and their collective incomes took a major hit since his fiancée could not work.

Regardless, Pederzani said he had no problem paying back the amount he borrowed. In fact, he wants to. But he said he wished more people — and the president — would recognize that high-paying jobs don't benefit everyone who pursues them. He was able to work as a clerk at a personal-injury firm for a short time but moved to New Mexico during the pandemic and jobs were in short supply.

Don’t care. I’m not paying for it.

Bad choices

StevePederzani Would it pay to take a bar review course at a New Mexico college and volunteer at a legal clinic? Changing states seems tough.

It's no different than buying a car you can't afford.. Just because you get the opportunity (loan approval) to go to a certain school doesn't mean you should.

He is trying to skip the 'pay your dues' portion of your career. He could easily make a low six figures salary right now, but he doesn't want to work for it.

Steve is proof positive of unethical lending that benefits corrupt colleges/universities and lender. Schools have no skin in the game! For their benefit Big Gov. makes loans NO ETHICAL banker would make. The People should rise up and get the government out of school loan biz.

This is a shame. In communist Russia there were no student loans the state paid for everything. A shame it collapsed horribly.

Bad investment

'- so he thought taking out student loans would be worth it.' His decision.

Is law school that expensive?

I think a lot of people that have suffer through this economy are being forgotten I think we are considered the little people that they can sweep under the rug

Fool. Just because they spent that much doesn’t mean they learned anything.

I call bs… I’m sure there are many public defender jobs out there. Start there and work way up. It may not pay $300,000 a yr but gotta start somewhere and gain experience. Get in the game, network and grind my man.

Why spend that much money to get a law degree? State law schools are not that expensive. Im pretty certain he can go to usajobs and get a job. Real news please 💔
