University students 'priced out' of graduation due to cost of living

Couple Sian Billington and Rhys Churchill, both 23, have missed four graduation ceremonies between them.

Miss Billington added: "It's anti-climactic to get your degree in the post, but what they're asking us to pay for graduation is not worth what we're getting in return." "I don't think the university have considered external costs for people travelling back to Cardiff for graduation. Olivia Morgan, 21, graduated from the University of South Wales last year and attended her graduation ceremony in April."It was on a week day, which is usually less expensive, but they had bumped the price right up."

I'd have been glad, I only went to mine cause my parents wanted me to. Soooo boring!

My son chose not to go to his graduation 18 years ago because he thought it was a waste of money. He received his degree through the post. His choice.

I skipped that bit and went along for the strawberries and cream afterwards. Much cheaper.

A very long time since I was at uni and I didn't even get invited to the graduation ceremony 😂 don't think I missed out on anything though 🤷‍♀️

I paid for my daughter's graduation tickets ,our hotel and travel etc and photos. My daughter paid for her cap and gown for last week. The tickets were £30 and she paid £70 for gown hire. We know these ceremonies are going to happen for 3 years so no excuse.

More rubbish from the BBC the price for these has always been high

can't budget? as nothing to do with cost of living. BBC we are victimising foreigners? where do they keep finding them. go home if we treat you so badly

Probably spending all their money on partying might have something to do with it.

Wait till the fuckers realise they have been had and are already tens of thousands in debt studying for a job they're is only one or two of in the country and there were hundreds of people doing the same course.

£145 for the day I should think that’s about the same as a weekend on the pop with a takeaway after

I didn't attend either of my graduations, load of outdated pomp.

Usual BBC in-depth reporting, fails to mention the main reason is Ede & Ravenscroft monopoly on graduation clothing, still in place after 300 years!!

Really? Pretty sure all of them have the latest iPhones and multiple clothing pieces costing three figure sums. Not to mention nights out that have cost hundred or more.

You still get your degree without the fancy dress..

I didn't go to any of my graduations, it's just expensive pomp and ceremony and I still struggle to see the appeal. You get the end result whether you attend or not.
