A group of parents take matters into their own hands to bring a school catering for the individual needs of children with autism to Perth.

"This model helps teach them those distinct skills and fill in the gaps so that they can be successful. It's almost like a magical experience, seeing them unlock their capacity to learn, and that's really exciting."

Perth mother Jenny enrolled her 10-year-old son in the program after facing difficulties at multiple mainstream schools. "The experiences [my eldest] has had in school so far have left him quite traumatised, so to try and undo that damage and go in with a fresh start, it is hard process."Jenny said it was "crazy" that a group of parents had taken it into their own hands to open an autism school, without any assistance from the state government.

"The Western Australian public school system caters for the individual needs of students with autism spectrum disorder by providing a range of education options built on the principles of equity and inclusion," Jim Bell, acting director-general for student achievements at WA's Education Department said.

I was at a school where the year before they had one autistic student. They went overboard to accommodate this kid. Word got out, next year there were eight. Really mucked up the footy team.

I hope Samuel achieves his goals of going to uni...on campus learning is overwhelming for most students without disabilities... Online learning at uni for Samuel is a real possibility if he is interested computers with the help of a tutor...

Why isn't there a safe space at Samuel's school that allows him to decompress without his mother having to take him in and out of school even if his mother stays and where is his ed assistant ? WA schools could be more accommodating in that aspect.

Are you trying to tell me people who have a uni degree are unable to devise a plan and have his mother come to school multiple times a day?
