In a one-on-one interview with Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary spoke about the importance of a diverse aviation workforce, and about a Compton non-profit helping young people of color take to the skies.

COMPTON, Calif. -- If you've traveled this summer or are heading to an airport soon, the possibility of delays and cancellations remain a major concern.

"Schedules that may not be realistic, and very it's important to be able to fly the actual schedules you're selling tickets on," Buttigieg said."And these customer service issues, the only thing more frustrating than getting canceled or delayed is being at the airport, calling the airline and finding out it's going to take you three, five, eight hours to actually talk to somebody.

"Most minorities growing up, we're just not exposed to pilots or aviation or airports, or things of that nature. It takes exposure to something for you to build an interest in it and want to do it," said Demetrius Harris, the president of the Fly Compton Aeronautical Education Foundation.

Diversifying based on one race group is non-diversity. It’s discriminatory against other race groups. That is what the government doing.

Nobody cares what the race of the pilot is. They just care if you get ‘em from point a to point b. Would be nice if he would actually work on something important for once.

Are airlines willing to have the business crash for a good ESG score?

And the hits just keep on comin’…

There's currently a shortage of most air crews. Which means all you have to do to get in is the required work and they'll hire you.

Now do the NBA, definitely not diverse

How about tell people you have an equal opportunity to get into aviation.

So now we are going to choose who pilots jumbo jets through the air at 500 miles and hour with 200 people aboard, based on the persons skin color.

It’s not like the aviation industry is actively resisting diversity. This is a similar issue in law enforcement and other career fields that have been historically make dominated but there’s always an argument for doing better.
