‘Everybody is confused’: Humanities students hit with surprise fee hikes | daniellamariewh

University students wanting to pursue honours say they’ve been unfairly slugged up to $15,000 in extra fees despite enrolling in the course before the federal government introduced cost hikes in 2020.

In 2020, the Coalition government announced an overhaul of university funding, dubbed the Job Ready Graduates reforms, resulting in a 113 per cent increase in fees for most arts degrees. In 2018, Gu enrolled in a combined Bachelor of Arts and Advanced Studies degree, intending to complete honours in history.

“Those who enrolled in the degree from its 2018 introduction to 2020 who want to pursue honours in their other major must change degrees and incur the new fees purely because of the constrictive internal structures of the university.” The university said when the 2018 and 2019 course handbooks were released, it had no knowledge of the fee changes and changing majors was of little consequence.
