An Ontario high school teacher plans to continue with an alternative method of grading her students after an experiment last semester in which students proposed a grade and had to justify it with examples of their work.

An Ontario high school teacher plans to continue with an alternative method of grading her students in the new school year after an experiment last semester.

“The students propose their own grade at those two points and then they have to justify and prove to me that they have earned that grade,” Oliver explained. “There is lots of evidence that suggests that grades are very subjective,” she said. “It’s difficult to be able to objectively say, ‘This number is the number that truly captures the learning.’ What that might be in my classroom -- is that the same across another department, another subject area, another school?”

Oliver said students in every classroom have differing attitudes on grades. She says the ungrading experiment allows students across that spectrum to take ownership of their learning.

What an interesting approach. I can't tell you how many times my kids had no idea how their work would be graded, or even if they had properly completed the entire assignment. This forces them to compare their work to and evaluate it against the rubric.

this is great it's exactly how my yearly bonus/raise is determined

There are a few of us at the Ottawa Catholic School Board using GrowthOverTime to collect evidence of learning from our students. It is similar to a digital portfolio but, allows for conversations on pieces of work through the course. ocsbGoingGradeless

There are a ton of teachers already doing this and have been for years. Check out miss_packer.

There’s a teacher RidgemontHS that does something similar.

More educrat nonsense.

Probably not approved by the ministry of education. Student input is ok up to a point. To argue that grading is subjective denies her role as a teacher whose job it is to grade objectively based on the curriculum rubrics. Too much touchy feely here. My guys can grade themselves.

Thank goodness, we are no longer going on merit or even ability. Imagine people having to be held accountable or having to put effort into things.

Seems about right

Yep that sums up the left, it’s all about how you “feel”.

This only works for like visual art or music

This proves that the school system and education at all levels is failing. And it goes back to at least the time this teacher somehow graduated from teachers college.

Thats fine ...until students apply to university. Careers mean proficiency and grades a way to gauge it.

She is taking a 2 month summer vacation and anticipating Fords wage increase .

Wow, way to set the bar low

Then these students will fail colleges and universities.

...and then the students wonder why they struggle so badly in first year of University.

Dumbing down of Humans to please the WEAK
