Elected to office May 7, Arredondo was sworn in a private ceremony one week after the May 24 shooting and never attended a council session. He faced the prospect of removal if he missed another meeting. Family and friends of the 19 children and two teachers killed in the shooting have descended on two council sessions in the past two weeks demanding he quit the council or that council members replace him.
“After much consideration, I regret to inform those who voted for me that I have decided to step down as a member of the city council for District 3,” he told the Uvalde News Leader, which first reported the story. “The mayor, the city council, and the city staff must continue to move forward without distractions. I feel this is the best decision for Uvalde.”
The newspaper did not say if his resignation was immediate, and Mayor Donald McLaughlin Jr. told the San Antonio Express-News he had yet to confirm Arredondo’s decision. The mayor said he received a text message Saturday morning with a link to the News Leader story“I haven’t seen anything from Pete,” McLaughlin said, adding he had been in a dead area on his mobile phone earlier in the morning and hadn’t checked his emails yet. “The deal I saw is the Uvalde News is saying he is calling it quits.
