There's a shortage of Texas high school sports officials. Contributing factors include the COVID-19 pandemic and verbal abuse from fans.

PUBLISHED 1:35 PM CDT Jun. 22, 2022“I miss being in the action,” Allen said. “I miss being with the crew.”

Allen’s decision to retire is part of a trend with high school officials. The Texas Association of Sports Officials said their membership dropped by over 12% from the fall 2017 through spring 2021. That’s a loss of nearly 2,000 officials. The COVID-19 pandemic has sped up an exodus from the profession and repeated instances of verbal abuse.

Allen said he’s experienced vitriol first hand on multiple occasions, both on the gridiron and after the game in the parking lot.
