Father’s Day is one of the happiest days on my calendar. But for the past 26 days, my thoughts of fatherhood have been clouded with images from a place I have never been: Uvalde, Texas, writes Mark Bulgutch

Father’s Day is one of the happiest days on my calendar. I don’t need any presents from my two grown daughters or from my adolescent granddaughter. They are gifts enough.

There has been enough anger, disbelief and yes, dissembling expressed since then, so there’s no reason to pile on more of it here. There is a tiny part of me that says I shouldn’t care. I live in a country that doesn’t fetishize guns. We don’t have mass murders every other day. We don’t treatas sacred text. We aren’t a perfect country, and while something like what happened in Uvalde could happen here, it is nowhere near as likely.
