TORONTO - Ontario Premier Doug Ford has not even named a new cabinet, fresh off his majority election victory, and one of the biggest challenges his new government will face is already staring him down.

The government is eyeing early July to start discussions, but at least one union is pushing back on that timeline. The Canadian Union of Public Employees, which represents 55,000 Ontario education workers, said it doesn’t agree to the delay and may take the issue to the Ontario Labour Relations Board.

“Highways were mentioned over 150 times and education was really barely mentioned at all, so it shows the priorities,” she said in an interview. Bill 124, legislation that capped compensation increases for public sector workers, played a large role in the tensions but the government had also angered teachers by increasing class sizes and mandating two online courses for high school graduation. Ford’s first education minister also mused about cuts to full-day kindergarten.

“It’s time to have some real conversations about how we are paying and how we are treating those folks who are frontline during a pandemic,” said Laura Walton, president of CUPE’s Ontario School Board Council of Unions.

Fire them all;!!! Enough of blackmail by holding kids hostage!

Right now fordnation has a Minister of Education that’s more concerned about Nonas than he is about our kids and their teachers and an aid that is hell bent on telling women they can’t have an abortion Here’s hoping otffeo turns the tables on Ford onpoli FordFailedTeachers

Move Sflecce to another portfolio. He is not competent as minister of education.

As long as our taxes go down accordingly I say Privatize we are WAY overtaxed for what we get. Just a boatload of people on the sunshine list for teachers/nurses.

Remember that time we elected a “premier” without an education and wondered why he did such a bad job of managing education?

Never see deemed to poverty disabled injured workers at the bargaining table. Must be great for the economy, that's been raising prices while WSIB banks billions.

“Highways were mentioned over 150 times and education was really barely mentioned at all, so it shows the priorities,” onpoli onted

The issue isn't what is he going to do for these teachers. How is he going to make teaching and nursing a profession that competent people want to pursue? The risk vs reward isn't there when they begin to add up student debt and their own efforts.

Thanks for posting this as now the ignorant, Ontario teacher bashers will be out in full force, the ones who clearly know nothing abt how bargaining works. Yet think they have all the answers🙄 CdnMediaFailed as usual!

I wouldn’t want to be the Minister of Education this Fall.

I have been waiting all of cv for all Health Care Professionals, and all Education Professionals to collectively Wildcat If the entire Service Industry went on GeneralStrike in solidarity, we could smash ONgov to cinders overnight

We have been told we are striking even if a deal is done. Our unions only want to deal with the NDP onted etfo teachers
