The Ohio Senate voted Wednesday to slash the training teachers and other staff must go through before carrying a gun on school grounds, advancing a bill that Republicans fast-tracked in response to the mass shooting at a Texas elementary school last week.

The Ohio Statehouse on Capitol Square in downtown Columbus. The capitol houses the Ohio General Assembly, which consists of the House of Representatives and the Senate.COLUMBUS, Ohio -- would require armed school staff to undergo an amount of training similar to that required of armed security guards and private investigators -- who must complete 25 hours of firearms training. That’s compared to the 600 hours in current law, the same training requirements for police,.

But the proposal picked up momentum recently as Republicans turned to school security, rather than toughening gun-control laws, as a focus in the aftermath of the Texas shooting, which left 19 children and two teachers dead. Because the Senate made changes to the bill, it’s now headed back to the House, which is holding what could be its final session of the summer today. Whatever the legislature comes up with then would head to Republican Gov. Mike DeWine’s desk for his signature.

In her own floor speech, Sen. Teresa Fedor, a Toledo Democrat, called on DeWine to veto the bill, saying it would make schools less safe.who for years have rolled back gun restrictions repeatedly in Ohio

This will not end well.

Expecting teachers to be better than trained officers is ridiculous w 24 hours of training. Im sure an innocent 55 yo teacher couldnt be overpowered by 2 18 yos. Just stupid. We need to be better than this.
