My son Patrick recently received his master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counselling and no, I didn’t cry at all. . But sitting in that large auditorium of Southern Connecticut State University, I realized something. Despite the long speeches and the fact these ceremonies go on a bit, they’re still incredible for three reasons…– From the moment the graduates first entered the arena in black caps and gowns, the air became electric with excitement.
My husband Randy and I took in our son Patrick with pride as he walked by. He had a similar look of awe on his face as his classmates, viewing thousands of people who had turned out to celebrate their achievement. Gazing around at all the skin tones and nationalities and dress, I saw how this moment transcended ethnicity and culture. We were there to celebrate the best in our human family.
As one speaker noted, this group had to work for a masters during the height of the Covid pandemic. In Patrick’s case, it took three years and countless classes, practicums, and internships. I know the dedication and belief in yourself you must develop to keep going. Endless admiration abounds for my son and those others who toughed it out.– At the end, everyone gave one last cheer and then it was over.
I looked around and thought: Why can’t life always be like this? So good and promising and full of hope? What if all the energy we humans used in breaking things be put into making more of these moments? I wanted to bottle all that love and keep it for when the world gets grim and overwhelming. If you think about it, there’s always something worth celebrating.
Finally, we said our goodbyes to Patrick and Julia who were leaving to get dinner together. We each gave one last hug to our graduate who had worked so hard for this. What events in life give you hope? Comments are always welcome and if you’d like to receive posts by email,
