After the Uvalde mass shooting, GOP leaders are again pushing to boost school security. But similar legislation after a 2018 school shooting has fallen short of its goals, and experts said there’s no evidence such tactics work.

Four years after an armed 17-year-old opened fire inside a Texas high school, killing 10, Gov.tried to tell another shell-shocked community that lost 19 children and two teachers to a teen gunman about his wins in what is now an ongoing effort against mass shootings.

In January 2020, the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District received $69,000 from a one-time, $100 million state grant to enhance physical security in Texas public schools, according. The funds were comparable to what similarly sized districts received. Khubchandani said the majority of public schools in the United States already implement the security measures most often promoted by public officials, including locked doors to the outside and in classrooms, active-shooter plans and security cameras.

Khubchandani and education advocates said locking doors and routing everyone through one entrance is already standard practice in most districts. And safety leaders said locking exterior doors is a best practice, but it’s one strategy that needs to be strictly enforced. That same audit revealed 626 districts did not have active-shooter policies. Another 196 had active-shooter policies, but auditors found those plans were insufficient.

Bullshit to the Texas Tribune. I guess they are now woke.

When you leave a door open and unlocked, that's not a very 'hardened' school. That's an open invitation for all sorts of bad things.

Turning Friendly Hank, the school custodian loose with a pistol to fend off a loon with an AR 15 is a formula for disaster. Ban the AR 15's, extended mags and cause deep background checks. The rest being discussed is total BS. Raising the age is a joke.

NOT TRUE! Rich kids of gun control leaders attend safe protected schools while average kids go to gun free killing zones

Does anyone actually believe this garbage?

You people are sick. If a person who is there to protect children somehow is detrimental to children of color then your own narrative is working. This is a product of leftist lies and the purposeful demonizing of law enforcement. You should be ashamed.

Opening the exterior door is the contributing cause. Duh

Maybe journalists should just publish a list of things that AREN’T racist- if such a thing actually exists

No one believes the “experts” anymore

Oh get off the BS reporting. Dam rag papers..

Obviously there was a lapse. If a door was propped open that's a problem. If the door didn't actually lock as designed, that's a problem. If that door was locked a lot of this may have bot occurred.

No kidding.🙄

Those so called experts sound racist

Half of the story is 'oh what a pittance the school districts got for security, the other half is increased security doesn't work. 'In January 2020, the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District received $69k from a one-time' What did they do with $69k? How many schools?

'Black students and parents said the idea made them feel less safe in school, knowing they are disciplined more than other students.' What is your source? I can't find anything on the internet, other than the common narrative from this story.

'Hardening' is for when the shooter is already on campus. The proposals admit the schools are not safe. ItsTheGunsStupid

Caught on evening news the shooter in Dallas - thank God no kids were killed. Beefing up security in schools is detrimental to children and arming teachers is a joke. GunReformNow

Experts also told us that inflation was transitory.

ban all guns and end racism

There’s no evidence such tactics won’t work.

They have no new ideas b/c they don't really want to protect children as much as they want to protect this political futures. Kids' futures? For them, expendable.

Waste of $. Been there done that. AbbottFailedTexasAgain GunControlNow 50SenatorsHaveBloodOnTheirHands

Please ask GovAbbott for an account of the timeline from when he heard of the shooting to the 1st news conference, and why he was at a fundraiser instead of overseeing the state response? Ask what was on those detailed notes he said he took and presented at the first presser.

Yes but there’s lots of evidence that it provides $$$ to private companies that provide this “hardening.”

No-evidence legislation is the Republicans' favorite, typical death cult fantasists.

How many millions, billions for this unworkable 'solution' so the GOP can say it did something (while still allowing 18 yr olds unfettered access to AR 15s.) My tax money so they can cover their a****. Nothing to keep a shooter from open firing on a playground, park, etc.

Has there ever been a school shooting at a school that required all the kids to wear uniforms?

txchristabelle enough is enough

Nothing on this planet will ever harden schools to the impenetrability of a Republican official's heart. TexasDeservesBetter BetoForGovernor GunSense

Republicans want to do anything they can to appear to be doing something that will not address the problem of gun violence in the country whatsoever

Texas police promise to 'never stand down' again post-UvaldeThe gunman was inside the school for around 80 minutes before he was killed by a Border Patrol tactical team. ok guys. Just admit your core competencies are writing tickets and eating donuts. You're literally useless. Take an hour or more to respond to 911 calls, never solve any crimes unless it's obvious like domestic battery. Pathetic.
