ICYMI: Families in Melbourne’s north are increasingly rejecting their local public schools in favour of private secondary schools, saying public high schools in their area are below-par.

Enrolment figures in Moreland’s north suggest a growing number of parents are bypassing their local state secondary school.Comparatively, public primary enrolments have grown by 40 per cent.Non-government Islamic schools in the area have boomed.Families in Melbourne’s north are increasingly rejecting their local public schools in favour of private secondary schools, with a surge in Islamic school enrolments.

“We moved into the area just prior to our first child being born and basically from mother’s group the first question you’re asked is, ‘what school will you be sending your child to?’, because there are limited public options, particularly if you have boys,” Singh said. Kate Lamont has three children that attend Oak Park Primary School and says none of the parents she has spoken to on the issue plan to send their children to the local zoned high school. Instead, they are seeking places in non-government schools or at state schools elsewhere.

Singh said the group simply wanted local public schools they could send their children to with confidence.“We just want a state school that has average outcomes. At the moment the schools we have in our area are well below average.”

Not just Moreland schools What about the secondary school in Melton which reportedly sacked 25 teachers recently. (In one day !! )

sounds like public schools need more funding, great work

People make these decisions everyday about every school! Another beat up from the “Age” 🙄

Yep , sold my house in oak park because the public schools available in that area were unacceptable to our family , moved suburbs and sent our 3 kids to a public school that was , kids did really well . We feel we made the right decision for our kids

Conveniently seems to have left out Strathmore Secondary College which is highly sort out, we’re in Moreland and could of sent our son there

'Families' 😂🤣😀I mean, if you believe this anti gov school trash talk, based on some toff family, then I've got a bridge to sell ya. I would say the opposite is true, hence this pathetic ad.

Utter bullish!t

Hahahaha…. Melbourne’s socialists too posh for the state schools 😂🤣🤣 typical

MarieColemanAO ICYMI Think you'll find they're mostly called state schools or government schools in Vic Not public schools

The gentrification of Brunswick is complete

Because the federal government pays significantly more per student in the private system. Public schools are being left behind. Interesting that you want to talk about it now after the election; no media wanted to discuss serious underfunding of public schools a few weeks ago.

The zoning is nonsensical. Sure, zoning is fine it all high schools were created equal. We are zoned for Fitzroy with no uniform, no focus on sports and JUST outside the zone for Northcote which is uniformed & sporty. 🤷🏻‍♀️ adamlcarey najsambul adamlcarey najsambul

Top cop admits police ‘made the wrong decision’ during Uvalde school shootingTexas' top cop admits officers made the 'wrong decision period' after it was revealed police waited outside a classroom for 45 minutes while killer Salvador Ramos was inside with students and teachers. Soooo sad I expect there's some sort of rules that they have to follow.😈 Police cannot do anything right these days, if they shoot an armed suspect they get slated, if they delay going in, they get slated. If the police had shot this guy, before he did anything, the woke groups and media would still be crucifying them.
