, state lawmakers convened in Austin and passed the most comprehensive school safety package in modern Texas history.
But at the same time, Abbott summarily rejected tighter gun laws as an option, instead continuing to tout the measures passed in 2019 and doubling down on those remedies. Abbott focused heavily on the “profound mental health challenges” in rural Texas, a sentiment echoed by House Speaker Dade Phelan.Attorney General Ken Paxton and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, meanwhile, advocated for more armed teachers and administrators, and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick repeated previous calls to strengthen school security.
Phelan’s office declined to offer additional comment on potential legislative action, including those that involved guns. Representatives for Abbott and Patrick did not respond to a request for comment. The Uvalde shooting came just days after the four-year anniversary of the shooting at Santa Fe High School, where a 17-year-old student killed eight peers and two teachers and injured 13 others on May 18, 2018.
, saying that he had “never supported these policies, nor has the majority of the Texas Senate.” A fraction of Abbott’s proposals made it past the finish line, and by the time he signed the school safety bills into law on June 6, Abbott said the red flag law wasn’t necessary in Texas “right now.” Instead, the Legislature greatly expanded gun laws with the passage of a so-called “constitutional carry” law, allowing almost all Texans 21 and up to carry a handgun in public without a license. The legislation put an end to mandatory training classes for anyone looking to carry a handgun, either concealed or openly.

So heartbreaking
RobAnderson2018 Crying on your killers shoulders. SenTedCruz does not care.
Locking back doors and remote access points to elementary schools may help too. Deaths were caused by a disturbed 18 year-old. Population of Uvalde, Texas is about 15,000. Most residents own at least one firearm. 14,999 managed to refrain from murdering anyone.
Cowards tedcruz
Duh, the NRA won’t let their employees change any rules that would hamper gun sales.
These people you refer to as GOP leaders are only where they are because Texans voted them into office. If Texans vote them in again, then we’ll know for sure that guns are more important than children
As is Ted Cruz.
It’s almost as if the severity of getting hit with lethal bullets has something to do with the tallying deaths caused by firearms 🤔
Because they didn’t do anything to restrict guns. The NRA WANTS MASS SHOOTINGS. THEIR GUN SALES GO UP AND TED CRUZ IS HAPPY TO OBLIGE.
School safety is a great idea if you want to “pass the buck”. The real problem is too many guns floating around and too easy access to guns. An 18 yr old being able to buy a gun, an assault rifle twice, is a big part of the problem. School safety is a mere bandaid!
Republicans are paid spokespersons for the gun lobby.
