Law-enforcement agencies that have studied young shooters say there are several warning signs that lead up to mass shootings—and that early intervention is critical in preventing them.

“It’s an early-warning system that alerts us that something might be going on, so we can address it before it gets to the level of a criminal act,” said Quintin Shepherd, superintendent of the Victoria Independent School District in Victoria, Texas, some 200 miles east of Uvalde, where 19 elementary students and two teachers wereMore than 1,000 people gathered at an arena in Uvalde, Texas to remember the 21 victims, most of them children, who were killed by a gunman at Robb Elementary School.

The alerts typically contain the flagged wording, the type of threat and where the student typed the words.
