It was not immediately clear how many schools in Los Angeles Unified School District had walkouts. The district issued a statement supporting students who wished to speak out on issues – but stressed that students should remain on campus while engaging in advocacy, saying that the campuses are the safest places for them.
“The past several years have been difficult as our nation has grappled with a pandemic, gun violence, continued racial injustice and inequality, women’s rights and the effects of climate change,” the district said in its statement. “These issues are crucial and meaningful to our students and Los Angeles Unified encourages their right to advocate for causes that are important to them.
