Fifteen people were killed, including more than a dozen children, in a shooting at a Texas elementary school, Gov. Greg Abbott said Tuesday.1. Check in with your child and talk to them about their concerns.
With younger children, adults can explain all that adults do to keep them safe, such as locking doors and conducting emergency drills.3. Treat children according to their age. While older kids will understand that difference, prolonged exposure to graphic images and details is harmful to them as well.Children pick up everything their parents are saying and doing. Parents can set an example by turning off the television, radio or social media. It can be constructive for parents to acknowledge that constantly watching or hearing about a violent incident makes them too feel anxious or fearful.
With teenagers in particular, giving them extra time to be with their friends is important. It helps them establish normality and connect to their support network.Review safety procedures at school and at home. Let children know whom to call, where to meet and how to communicate in case of an emergency. This helps children feel secure and know adults are in control. The majority of children are resilient and will not experience long-term symptoms after a one-off event, experts said.
Laurie_Garrett ppl who believe they are *entitled* to own whatever guns they want....speaking to their kids...cause it won't be their kids that do the damage, right? We need to talk (worldwide) about laws that consider innocent civilians first over money making/control/power.
*forcing parents to tell their children that the 2A is more important than their lives. GunControlNow
Maybe if we keep gnashing our teeth, rending our hair and sending out thoughts and prayers gun violence in America will magically go away.
Parents shouldn't have to talk to their kids about gun violence and slaughter. We need immediate gun reform in this country. And the NRA needs to be shut down.
Laurie_Garrett Law abiding citizens did not create this. Criminals do not follow laws. Mental health is the issue.
Laurie_Garrett You’re shocked? Really? How many times do we have to go through this?
'Forcing parents and schools to once again confront how to talk to kids about violence' But certainly won't force the GOP to pass sensible gun legislation. Look at these mass shootings - they're all good guys w/ a gun, until they aren't.

Stop teaching kids how to talk about violence and ACT so that they don’t have to “learn how “. Tired of platitudes . 20 years in the classroom- stop telling our children to sit quietly and listen for the handle to shake in the lockdown drill and ACT instead .
How about armed security at schools. The school unions can afford this.
How about - we were too weak and concerned about our taxes to protect you from being hunted and viciously murdered. We voted for an easy life for us and gave yours away cheaply. thoughtsandprayers nomore heartbroken
It’s no longer shocking. It happens every fucking week. Thanks Republicans.
Laurie_Garrett Is it shocking though?
Shooters hate first, then find something to blame & leak their plans to avoid guilt. Someone hears those plans & does nothing blaming authorities, laws to avoid THEIR guilt for inaction. To stop these killings,we must stop making excuses for our inaction & BE OUR BROTHER’S KEEPER
They won’t learn. May as as well talk to a brick wall.
oh sure, lets talk to kids bout it, damn kiddos always getting in the way of the bullets 🤡🤡
All well and good. But when are the government-run schools going to train security to defend our kids against such an attack? Are we not suppose to protect our children? Then defend them!
nbc last night aired “Jurassic World” which glorifies cool looking guns which was the only thing that stops a charging dinosaur… poor taste for a liberal network.
