Here's what the new owners of the Sokolowski's University Inn have planned for the land

“I love the atmosphere, the people, the restaurants, the bars. It’s just a great place to be,” said Becca Phillipson, a longtime resident.

But last November, Giancarlo Calicchia and Michael Nance entered the picture and became the newest owners of 1201 University Road. They plan to bring new life into the land and Tuesday they presented their plan for it to the Tremont neighborhood at the Polish Veterans Alliance. The plan is to get rid of the former restaurant and build, in its place, a 6-story apartment complex that has a public 2nd-story terrace overlooking the Towpath.

“Unifying this with the Towpath, the raised platform, the availability to accessible, small, cost-effective pods for local purveyors of goods of all sorts. It’s exciting you can stop at the Towpath and get off your bike, or stop from your walk and have a coffee, pastry, a drink, a bite to eat and continue on your journey,” he said.

And yet again I hold my breath and hope my landlord doesn’t use this as an excuse to raise the rent.

This is a tragedy of a design

So are we getting sokolowski food or no? I think that’s the only thing anyone cares about

They’ll have a beautiful view of traffic wizzing by at 60 mph. I had a much better view from 1103 university

Covering the road with a balcony is... a choice

this is terrible. bedrooms without windows and they plan on using the public parking lot for employee parking. something can and should be done in that space, but not this.

More modern apartments changing the face of the neighborhood that no one can afford! They did this in Little Italy and changed the feel of the entire neighborhood.

I’m all for it, but this is structurally confusing since they had to reinforce the hill and is going to be a huge clusterfuck coming off the highway exit ramp.

big bowl of wrong

Love it....except for that weird under deck. Is that for increased parking? There is already loads of parking in that area.

I like most development but I've reached my limit here. This freaking sucks.

Will never be what it once was. Nothing more then a venture capital pipe dream for profit. Call it what it is. Doesn't even stay true to the landscape or history of Tremont. Quit blowing smoke up those who knew and love Sokolowski's.

not sure it is allowed to take over the public street like this, but nice idea

I’m calling for a CURSE to be put on that place! Can’t some rich dude save Sokolowski’s They will be a hero!

Just hope they pay homage to the history of this site!

No thanks.

Tear down a historic place for a characterless box?

Is there any sane person in Cleveland looking at all of the apartment construction and asking,” Who is actually going to live there?” Cleveland is one of the poorest big cities in America with stagnant population growth, so why are we so invested in building “luxury” apartments?

More tenants hunting for free street parking? What's not to like?
