Museum of Fine Arts' Joe Havel is retiring after 30 years as Glassell School of Art director

After 30 years as director of the Glassell School of Art at Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Joseph Havel is retiring. During Thursday’s 2022 Glassell School of Art Benefit and Auction, chairs Leigh and Reggie Smith honored Havel’s three decades of service.

“Joseph Havel has made the Glassell School of Art an essential laboratory for creativity, seeding the city of Houston with three generations of artists who now occupy prominent positions in our community,” said Gary Tinterow, director and Margaret Alkek Williams Chair of MFAH.

Havel had a hand in Glassell’s relatively new facility, too. He worked closely with Steven Holl Architects on the school’s current home, which opened in 2018.
