Yes this is what funds Canadian education.

Its not a dream anymore! Under the current regime of JustinTrudeau, and the horrible services/abuse of CitImmCanada officers, it became a nightmare. People just need an exit from this dark swamp of immigration. IRCC's got very bad reputation to Canada, and this is very bad.

Too bad.. they are taking up spots from people who live here. They take alot of jobs too and lower salaries because they take crap pay and corporations love them for it. Sick of coddling to international students from the Canadian government

Aren’t parents aware of this before they get their kids on plane to 🇨🇦 it’s definitely their hard earned money, but the bigger issue is int. students not getting a good quality of education and at least a chance of career growth in 🇨🇦 also this:

If community colleges were funded properly, they would not be relying so heavily on international students. People who have never paid into the system should not have all the benefits. If I choose to study abroad, I can expect to pay more than domestic students.

I felt it was one reason my son didn’t get into art college. The college made more money from foreign students!

That why they get in and our own students don’t

We also pay tax...

Should be 10x

As they should. Canadian taxpayers should and will not accept the burden of those decisions of foreigners.

And?

About time we start looking after our own

Only CBC would write something so divisive and hateful to regular Canadians and the work our families have put into our country for years. International students can work in our country and get our education for reasonable, and they have a good chance of getting citizenship..fo!

Just like we would if we went to their country, the states, or any other country in the world.......what a stupid story!!!

And they should as they and their families have not paid taxes for generations to pay for the subsidized education.

As it should be.

As it ahould be.

I went to a UK university for my PhD, and I paid roughly $15,000 CAD in tuition before I got scholarship. I don’t recall the Guardian write a pity article about me! Can’t take the heat; leave the kitchen….. simple math!

Provincial loans to students ARE NOT SUBSIDIES

They have been a cash cow for decades

A big piece of missing context here: the government heavily subsidizes domestic student tuition. It’s not so much that international students are charged more (though that’s certainly an element), it’s that they cost more because the government doesn’t help out.

In addition to all the comments above, if it cost less, I wonder how many local students wouldn’t have a place in the program because it was already full.

And well they should it’s a privilege to come here and get a good education

Typical Canadian State-run media pandering to the masses. Defend the over 1,000,000,000 the CBC gets from the government.

They should.

They pay the regular cost of tuition as Canadians, who've been paying taxes for years, get it subsidized. 💯 % they way,it should be. If they're suppose to be in school full time they shouldn't be allowed tk work full tame. So many are scamming the system getting put under table

They can come here as a choice and then leave if that's all they came for. Funny thing is that I've seen this in my program. Some came to go back home and manage the family business. The assumption here is that it's a path to residency. I don't think that was the explicit intent

This is not news. Post secondary schools do it across the globe. Canadians pay higher fees when we study abroad also. It can’t be that slack a news day to resort to trying to stir controversy when there isn’t one. newsfail

Good... and Non Canadians shouldn't be allowed to own Canadian property... that is why our housing/property prices are so high.... grab a brain people

We already have our housing market messed up with no benefits for residents. Any country resident can pay in cash and buy a house and now we have this to add. Great!

DUH !!!!

It’s not the fees alone, why are international students limited to work 20 hours a week compared to another domestic student who has no restriction? With rising inflation and cost of living, that’s unequal distribution and double standard in my opinion.

This is not new.

That’s pretty standard worldwide, not really the click bait this was meant to be. 🤷🏼‍♀️

The system is so underfunded that it relies on the extra funding from international students. Canada is under no obligation to subsidize the education of kids from other countries.

Because parents have paid taxes, plus tuition, for these institutions. What the fuk CBC?

Lets push those real Canadians out of their spots in Canadian Universities paid for by Canadian taxpayers, and CBC which is paid for by Canadian taxpayers, is against it, how hypocritical can you get?

Ya right.

Canadian taxpayers paid for the universities and are subsidized by our taxpayer paid school system which gives them clients. Consequently the difference in tuitions

And they should.

If the tuitions were too high relative to the value of education received, they would go to school here…

As they should.

It is not our responsibility to fund foreigners education. Stay home and study. Stop forcing our country to change for CHOICES.

That a student died seems unrelated to tuition fees, so that’s an odd take. But of course they’d have higher tuition fees — they and their families aren’t paying the same taxes the rest of us are

They should pay more, they never paid taxes to support and pay for the educational system.

Should be more than that

Who approve the picture with this article ?

Of course they have to pay more. Ridiculous complaint.

Sigh

It has always been this way, for good reason.

Oh cry me a river ffs

Yes, and?

Canadian born students should pay less to go to school in their own country. If foreigners want to come here, they should have to pay more than natural born Canadians so that Canadians are not prevented from going to school because all the spaces are taken up by foreign students

Don't our taxes subsidize universities and colleges?

And so they should. International students displace local students, based on a entrance requirements rating. Lots of locals don’t get the career they want because they get relegated to something else.

They should

International students should pay more. Do they not understand that Canadian taxpayers subsidize post secondary institutions thru taxation that families of international students have never paid.

You know it's bad, when non-citizens are whining, I wouldn't doubt it if the gov gives in as usual. It's called subsidies, so its paid by taxes from Canadians, they have to pay more. Unreal

As they should. We don't owe the world affordability. Their fees are subsidising costs for locals, we provide them with quality institutions that give their students credibility in the job market.

It’s been that way for years. The university sets aside spots for international students

Canadians paid for the schools, they should pay at least there share.

And why not? We heavily subsidize universities. I would question if that is even enough to cover costs. I suspect the taxpayer is subsidizing them to a certain degree. That would not be right but universities care nothing for efficient use of taxpayer funds.

How do we ban them?

the lower tuition is subsidized through taxes. In USA, you are paying triple if you attend out of state. So if my son goes to any other university that is not in Michigan, he pays triple at least.

Education for foreign students in Canada is still cheaper comparing to other developed countries. But I guess these students don’t know how much tax we are paying in Canada.

If you want to come to this or any other country then the privilege to go to university are at the prices set out. You can choose another country if you wish but the taxpayers of this country don't want to subsidize your kids.

Rightly so! Your not Canadian!!

Its a choice to come here for an education. If they can pay, then they pay. Subsidizes our institutions.

Lies

It’s called doing business. It allows Canadian universities to keep tuitions down for Canadian students.

Why should Canadians subsidize foreign students?

Good

Should be 5 to 6 times higher.

That’s because many (not all) of their parents have paid INCOME TAXES IN CANADA for our entire Effing Lives. This is offensive.

Yep, totally normal and benefits domestic students

What on earth? Why is the shooting death of an international student a jumping off point to push a notion that international students shouldn't pay full costs in their fees?

Yes, because most Canadians do not realize the government pays 2/3 of tuition costs. No, we do not need to do it for foreign students. Their choice, they have post secondary education in their country.

Absolutely stupid article.

Same in any country, so what!

It's the same in US and every other major country with a decent education system. When I applied to stanford for 2012 first year engineer, my international tuition was 69k I believe. Without housing, food, etc. But it keeps domestic tuition low. Quebec is better in this regard.

As they should, otherwise they could displace our students as there are only so many seats available in the classroom .

and..?

Ok.

That’s because domestic students are subsidized. Not sure how much political will there is to extend that to foreign students.

Guess that’s the cost to buy a passport. Many local kids can’t even get into school because of the wholesaling of our education/immigration.

I don’t see this as a problem

Canadians pay taxes that support the universities.

Should be higher

Yes they do and students also pay extraordinary tuition fees outside of Canada as well as my son is doing.

I thought this is world wide regulation. Canadians pay a lot of money to study in the US as well 🤷🏽‍♀️

I thought this was by design?

Well they could stay in the country they are from and go to school there if it’s to much here.

Stupid CBC News article🙄

Neither they, nor their parents/guardians have lifetimes of paying taxes in Canada, money that was used to build the country’s universities./2

the CBC hate for Canada is incredible, I'm starting to think that foreign government are running the CBC. This shit makes no sense, the article was written by Satbir Singh Aulakh

You have money to study abroad so pay the fees!

The alternative is for Canadian taxpayers to subsidize international students, no thanks

Domestic university /college tuitions are subsidized by the tax payers. International students do pay more because the schools need to make money and tax dollars don’t (and shouldn’t) subsidize them.

That’s good news.

You made the choice to come to Canada for studies. The reason it is cheaper for Cdn students is because more than 50% of the cost of university is paid by tax payers. You send your kids to Cdn to give birth on Cdn soil so their child can come back to school on the Cdn tax payer

Nothing new been in place for long time... there is a reason education for domestic students is paid partial by tax dollars... international students do not pay into the tax system.... higher education is a privilege not a right. If it was it would be free

And they shouldn't be

They pay higher fees because public universities a subsidized by taxpayers. Why should Canadians pay for international students? They are eligible to work here, landing coop work terms.

Good let them pay more cuz they arnt canadians true ones

Wow! Who would have thought that children of taxpayers would have cheaper tuition than that of foreigners?

Does that include all the government grants and subsidies that the universities get that the international students don't have to pay?

Many of these students come from rich families that can afford to send them overseas to study.

Then don’t come here to go to school.

Shut up! JT will give them free tuition.

Canadian taxpayers over generations built the educational infrastructure here, not international students who come, stay a while, and leave. If they can't afford the cost don't come, and if they do come don't whine and ask for favors like we owe you something. We don't.

They're not paying 'more' they are not getting subsidized by the various level of government investing in our education. We're also getting that from taxes paid (yes they serve a purpose!)

And

Well they are international. But any student abroad pays more regardless. Room, board which encompasses food rations (university pays for) also transportation (monthly bus pass). So yes it's expensive. They are also paying for north American freedom!.

That's what funds lower cost for Canadian students...well known fact.

Fail to understand what was the point of this article?

They should pay more.. their families dont pay canadian taxes. Get educated and leave. Then pay more

As they should.

'... to achieve the dream of a future in Canada' They are here on student visas. The are not Landed Immigrants or citizens. When they graduate they go back home.

I think that's the easiest way for someone to get a permanent residence later on using student visas. The thing is young Canadians are losing the opportunities to land their dream job now that Canada has an abundance of foreign students. And put a huge dent on the salary.😛

No matter the country, all universities have international student rates. As do the public schools. It’s a revenue stream.

So what. I believe in putting our own first.

As they should. If I wanted to go to another country to get an education I would have to pay more also.

…. So Good let them pay, if they don’t want to pay dont come, who cares

And they should pay more than Canadians. Same as a foreigner enrolling in the USA ……enormous tuition fees.

The tragic death of a student should not be congruent to the cost arguments of international tuition fees. If I went to school in a different province, I, a Canadian, would also pay higher fees. And if I tragically died there, it would also be sad.

They should… it also works they other way when you go abroad.

As they should.

Only reason they pay 3 times the amount is because they end up getting work permits to stay in Canada and finally get PR....easy way to migrate here and beat the system.I am sure 90 percent of this so called students are not even working in their fields they studied for ...

Nothing new…it’s always been like this.

Ya, we know. We wouldn’t be able to fund universities without international students.

I got a feeling the government is gonna fix this by tripling the cost for domestic students. Then everyone is equal and Canadian Taxpayers get to subsidize whatever tuition doesn't cover.

Nothing wrong with that

Most of the working full time or part time and paying off their fees. Government have to hike the fees and all other immigration process fees

As they should! Why should I pay the high fees? Citizens should be the priority selected and the residual slots should be for international students that bill should be their share of the total operation cost of the program plus and 100% markup.

That’s never been a secret. Laurentian university blamed the lack of foreign students attending as part of their financial downfall.

Lets relieve our grads of the student loans they’re indebted with

That's true everywhere...including in India. I know someone who went to India from the States as a student. Their roommate was a local student but the international student had to pay so much more, over triple the price, even though they were sharing the same room.

And?

Education is subsidized by Canadian taxpayers, sorry, not interested in providing subsidized higher education to foreign students

and?

Education is subsidized with tax payers money. Why should foreign students get subsidy?

I am failing to see the point of this article. Is the headline an attempt to shame us for educating our own children with taxes collected from themselves and their families? Goddamn right foreign students should pay more... and how about 10x, not just 3-4x?

And that is the way it should be seeing they have not paid years of taxes in Canada.

Ripping people off

Es totalmente cierto .

If you want the cheaper rate than immigrate and pay taxes.

And?

Tell them to get their parents to give Canada 30% of their total income for life and their children can pay the same as a Canadian

Our tuition costs are subsided in Canada. If they weren't then we would be paying closer to international studies. Heck we tend to pay more if we go out of province. So do I feel bad for international students? Nope.

Of course they do. The domestic students pay into the tax system that subsidizes the schools. The foreign students do not. It would be unfair to charge each the same tuition.

These comments are 🔥.. no one gives a flying eff. Nice try CBC. You are a useless propaganda machine, propped up by the same liberal subsidies. . . I can't WAIT until your defunded.

That has always been the case

Yeah because people from here pay into the system in taxes, as do their parents. Int'l students pay the true cost of uni which is subsidized by taxpayers. Anyone complaining about this can fuck off

Canadians that study abroad pay more as well. Whether international students come here or go somewhere else, international students in any country pay more. It's not rocket science.

They've been a cash cow for years. Why is this news now?

Quebec students pay almost nothing compared with Ontario How about that?

Correct!

They have a choice to go to any school around the world. They choose Canada full well knowing the costs.

Thats bs they get more hand outs then anyone . The people born here in the working class are who struggle in this country . Where is my hand out . Where is my kids free college . Pretty sure if i go india i aint getting shit from there goverment

Which country doesn't charge international students far more? Don't manufacture race rows.

Cry me a river. My big family has paid high taxes over 2 generations to get what we have.

And this is an issue why exactly? Don't like the price don't study here, get your higher education in your own country.

Worthless virtue signalling article Why would they pay the same as Canadians?

Sounds fair, considering for the same education, they get more out if it because they work harder and are generally smarter. And it's far more likely a domestic grad will wind up working for an immigrant than the inverse.

Get a trade kids...oh no, you guys don't like physical labor...nevermind.

Uh good!.. I don’t care.. you’re coming here to steal education spots from real Canadians.. you can pay more. no crying about it.

It's always been this way. You're just noticing this now

So what’s the problem? You have some international nephews or nieces probably waiting to get into college and universities, and that’s you fight for.

Not our problem. Stop playing the sympathy card. ~ South Asian Canadian.

It's been like this forever, how is this news

Why is this a problem?

Just talk to universities. Nothing that we can do about it

Wait I thought canada was a racist hell hole

Makes sense, how is this news?

This is not news. If I were to study abroad I would expect to pay more than their citizens if they are being subsidized by their country via taxes collected in their country.

The prices are listed and I didn't leave the country to continue studies outside of Canada for the same reason, I'm not a rich kid. Many other countries out there, pick one with education and try your luck there..... pay or see ya!

Yes, and that's totally normal. We all pay all our lives from our taxes. So, those from other countries must pay their part too. Again, totally normal and fair.

Really weird to introduce the story by talking about the death of Kartik Vasudev and then segue into the completely unrelated topic of fees.

Here's CBC indirectly advocating for globalism AGAIN and for Canada to take in, house, educate all the world's poor. How about you advocate for Canadian CITIZENS for ONCE you sellouts!

So they should..what's wrong with that.. seriously

I think pretty much everyone agrees with this.

Why the hell would provinces subsidize foreign students? The only reason their costs are 3x is because they are not residents

I mean...they could just go to school in their own country? Problem solved...

and?

And they should...they don't pay taxes in Canada...higher education for Canadians is partially paid for via taxes.

The saddest part is they are being massively ripped off by Canada's 'private for profit' schools teaching mickey mouse courses and their courses don't have a lot of credibility in the real world looking for jobs.. It's disgusting Canada allows them.

So what’s the issue ? We train doctors for other countries yet are underserved vastly here in Canada ! 100% seats must have Canadians first,

Lets fix the cost of tuition for the domestic students first before we worry about that.

Well they get to live and study here… they should pay more. Canadian students already have more difficulty at getting into uni because of it
