JUST IN: Denver Public Schools placed North High School teacher Tim Hernández on paid administrative leave Friday after he marched with students who had organized a school walkout to protest the failure to renew the beloved Latino teacher’s contract.

“Where we come from is art”: Denver’s gentrifying Northside captured through the lens and poetry of its Latino youthStudents, parents and members of the North High School community organized protests this week after Hernández was told his teaching contract at the predominantly Latino school would not be renewed despite his English department’s support and the multiple community events Hernández put on for his students.

In 2021, Hernández was hired at North High School as a traditional teacher. The following year, Hernández said he was told the school didn’t have enough money to retain him as a traditional teacher but would hire him for an associate teaching position — a role that paid less and was under a one-year contract.

Hernández accepted the role. When Hernández — one of the few Latino teachers at the school and a resident of the Northside community — applied for an open teaching position for the next school year, he said school leadership informed him he did not interview well enough and that his contract would not be renewed.

Hernández said the decision not to hire him was retaliatory based on his clashes with North’s principal regarding diversity and equity issues.

He was an Associate Teacher on a One Year contract. He clashed with Admin by his own words He called White teachers racists He was not fired...its in his contract that he will automatically be Non-Renewed. Be better item 6 is pretty clear You left out there’s a new principal, a Latino, coming to North for the coming school year. Looks like a white conquistador, appropriating indigenous culture to me.
